Jem is truly outrageous,
Truly, truly, truly outrageous.
Woah! Jem!
The music’s contagious, outrageous!
Jem is my name,
No one else is the same!
Jem is my name!
There were a lot of really great cartoons in the ’80s. We covered some of them on last week’s post for the Letter “E”, but out of all of them my absolute favorite was “Jem”.
The cartoon follows Jerrica who is the owner and manager of Starlight music. Jerrica becomes Jem, the lead singer of the rock group “Jem and the Holograms”, thanks to a computer named Synergy and “magic” earrings. Isn’t that totally ’80s? Along with her sister, Kimber and two friends, Aja and Shana, the four form “Jem and the Holograms”.

I really loved all of the neon and hot pink that was Jem, but my favorite characters were the members of the rival rock band, “The Misfits”, which if you knew me wouldn’t be such a shock. I tend to like the bad guys a lot of the time. 🙂 I still have my Misfits Roxy doll, somewhere.

I loved how the music was such a crucial part of the cartoon. It reminds me of “Schoolhouse Rock”, which I adore too. I’ve always been drawn to shows, movies, cartoons where music is the focus. Makes sense that years later I would become obsessed with Vh1’s “Behind the Music”.

While Jem’s theme song was great and I still sing along to it today, when I listen to the other songs I really don’t see why I was so enthralled with the music. The songs are very monotonous, but maybe that was a good thing. It made it easy for all of us kids to remember the words.

I still can’t believe that “Jem” is 30 years old. But even after all of this time, I think she is still truly outrageous!

There are some pretty cool Jem craft projects you can make. These Jem and the Holograms Earrings are so amazing. I need to make myself a pair. Space Nona’s Stitchery has a Jem and the Holograms cross stitch pattern available and Knottybytes has cross stitch patterns for Jem and the Holograms and The Misfits. And I love this Jem makeup tutorial from Byrdie Beauty. So awesome!

  1. Thank you for showcasing my patterns! I love Jem & The Holograms! (Not the new movie… wow what a horrible experience that was) I always loved The Stingers myself!
