If you didn’t grow up in the ’80s or have never made a mix tape, you really did miss out. A mix tape was a compilation of songs recorded in a specific order. Some were random genres while others were genre specific.

Today you can make an electronic “mix tape” or playlist on your iPod or Spotify, but you can see what songs are on them. On a real mix tape, you really didn’t know what was on there until the song was played. It was a surprising and a lot of fun.

In the ’80s I made mix tapes for everything. I was the queen of mix tapes. I had a mix tape for my favorite hair bands, songs for school, yes, I did listen to my mix tapes at school, or songs for summer break. And for some reason all of my mix tapes would start with “I Love. . .” hair bands, Madonna songs, beach music. Whatever my mix tape was about it almost always started with “I Love”. I guess that wasn’t very creative.

Today I make my electronic mix tapes on my iTouch and on Spotify. I give them more creative names now, but still have a few that begin with “I Love. . .”, like this one on Spotify.

Do you still make “mix tapes”? What is your favorite song to add?

There are a lot of crafts to make using old mix tapes. I love these tape pom moms from Creme de la Craft. I Gotta Create has a cute vintage cassette case vase tutorial. The Chic Site has an awesome mix tape cake. And Chezlin has a great cassette wallet tutorial.

  1. Technically, I still "mix tape" with a playlist, but they are pretty much the same songs I made mix tapes of in the 80's!

  3. Yes! And you waited for the dj on the radio to annouce the song you wanted and you pushed the recordin button when the song started and push it again when the son finished and try very very hard to record as much song ans you could without the dj's voice.

  5. I never really made mix tapes, but I liked the ones other people made. Even just a few years ago my daughter made me mix–well, CD's for my birthday or mother's day.
I have some old cassette tapes that I'm thinking of spinning into some kind of musical yarn.

  11. I call them Playlists now, but I have a work out one, a writing one, one for my class where I teach.
I still own ONE mix tape; given to me by a boyfriend around 1989. I don't have anything to play it on though. But, if vinyl record players are making a come back (I still have those!) maybe table players will, too?
