Finally Learning to Knit

Sunday I decided I was going to learn how to knit. It’s not like I don’t have a million things going on right now or anything, right? 🙂 But I didn’t care. I sat down on the couch with both cats, turned on some TV shows I had taped, grabbed my cup of tea, a skein of yarn, and a pair of knitting needles and got started.

I have attempted knitting twice before and just couldn’t get it. But Sunday it was like my brain was on fire. I picked it up so fast that I was knitting in 20 minutes. It could also be due to the great tutorials by Knit Again, thanks Molly!

One thing I have learned in my two days of being a knitter is it is A LOT more time consuming than crocheting. What would have taken me a minute to crochet took me an hour to knit. But maybe that is due to the fact that I am new and still learning, at least that is what I am telling myself!

The thing I am struggling the most with is with holding two needles instead of just one hook. That is so challenging, and in turn is making my hands cramp up. I’m hoping that will subside over time.

So here it is. My very first knitting attempt.

I am so happy that it actually looks somewhat straight! This picture was taken Sunday afternoon so I have done a few more rows since then, but I am still nowhere near being done. I’m hoping by the end of the week I’ll have completed my first knit project.

Anyone else knit and crochet? Which do you prefer?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Also, don’t forget to sign up for a chance to win a Mome Rath. If there aren’t that many sign ups I might just have to send everyone one!

  1. I am all about instant gratification so I prefer crochet! I have not knit in a long while so I'm not even sure I count as a knitter anymore 🙂 your piece looks good!

  3. Hi! I knit and crochet both and love each one. There is a peace that you get from knitting so I do enjoy it. I have knit for 40 years and still have trouble holding the two 'stick' needles. I would recommend you try the circular needles as they are much easier to work with. I've seen it make the difference between a beginner being able to knit and not. Good luck! I thought your first piece looked great! Have a nice day! Twyla

  5. I only crochet, tried knitting a couple of years ago and couldn't for the life of me keep the stiches on the needles LOL My Mom does both and she perfers knitting, though I don't know why.

    What are you making?

  7. That's a very nice first knitting sample! I'm a crocheter and I have tried knitting, but I just don't enjoy it the way I enjoy crochet. Good luck to you, I know lots of people who enjoy both!

  9. For me it depends on the project. There are certain projects and forms that work out better with one or the other. I like crochet because it can come together a bit quicker and fixing your mistakes is easier to do. But then again I tend to like the look of knit pieces more…especially cables.

  10. i am the same as you, i have crocheted forever and finally learned how to knit so i could try it out. i love the way it looks, but i am way too impatient to do it very much! i prefer to crochet, and about the only thing I knit is scarves….with very big needles!

  11. Good job! And I love your pink needles. I knit and crochet, and what I prefer depends on my mood actually. I may knit for months on end and then put the needles down and crochet for even more months on end. Although I do prefer knitting on the train (circular, bliss), since I do seem to lose my crochet hook when I pack my crochet things together. How do you keep your hook in place when you take a break and move your stuff?

  13. I do both. I learned how to crochet first but wasn't very good at it. I picked up knitting about 5 years later. Now I am learning to crochet a lot better. I can't say that I prefer one over the other as long as I can play with yarn. 😉
